"It's so cool to see everything coming together and to see all 400,000 guests who come out over the 12 days to make memories. It is the place to be in September in Kern County."
That's fair organizer Roberts, talking to a local news crew this week as crews finished setting up rides and food stands at the Kern County Fairgrounds. The 2026 fair opened today, September 23, and runs through October 4 at 1142 South P Street, just south of downtown. Twelve nights, twelve free concerts at the Budweiser Pavilion, one admission ticket covering all of it.
The concert lineup gets most of the attention, but the schedule also includes three discount days, and they fall on a Friday, a Monday and a Tuesday.
The Twelve Nights, In Order
Every concert is free with paid fair admission, first-come seating, gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 8. Here's who's playing when, according to the fair's official concert schedule:
| Date | Day | Performer |
|---|---|---|
| Sept. 23 | Wednesday | Ernest |
| Sept. 24 | Thursday | Collective Soul |
| Sept. 25 | Friday | Barenaked Ladies |
| Sept. 26 | Saturday | Mario |
| Sept. 27 | Sunday | Ezequiel Peña |
| Sept. 28 | Monday | Gretchen Wilson |
| Sept. 29 | Tuesday | Chandler Moore |
| Sept. 30 | Wednesday | Carly Pearce |
| Oct. 1 | Thursday | Daughtry |
| Oct. 2 | Friday | '90s Rewind: The Sugarhill Gang, Treach of Naughty by Nature, C&C Music Factory |
| Oct. 3 | Saturday | Joe Nichols |
| Oct. 4 | Sunday | Industria del Amor |
None of that lineup has anything to do with what you'll pay to walk in. The concert is bundled into general admission no matter who's on stage that night. Ernest on opening night costs the same as Daughtry on closing week. The only variable that actually moves the price is which day of the twelve you show up on, and that's decided by three specific promotions, not by the marquee.
Where the Actual Discounts Land
According to the fair's published hours and admission details, the savings show up on exactly three days:
- Senior Day, Friday, Sept. 25. Admission and parking are free for guests 62 and older, but only from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barenaked Ladies play the pavilion that night.
- Friends and Followers Day, Monday, Sept. 28. Admission drops to $9, but only if you buy it online and only for that calendar day. That night's concert is Gretchen Wilson.
- Feed the Need, Tuesday, Sept. 29. Bring six or more non-expired canned goods and you're in free. Chandler Moore performs that night.
Three different mechanisms fall on three different nights.
How the Calendar Lines Up
The fair's posted hours vary quite a bit across the run. Monday through Thursday, the fair is listed as open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, September 25, the day carrying Senior Day, is listed as opening at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 2, the night of the '90s Rewind bill with the Sugarhill Gang and C&C Music Factory, is listed as opening at 3 p.m. That is a gap of four and a half hours between two Fridays. The senior free-entry window is listed as starting at 9 a.m., so it's worth confirming morning entry details on the fair's site before you head out.
The three promotions fall on a Friday, a Monday and a Tuesday. The discount days listed for this year's fair do not include the closing weekend, when Joe Nichols plays Saturday and Industria del Amor plays Sunday, or Daughtry's Thursday. Senior Day's free-entry window runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., so it covers the morning and early afternoon, while that night's Barenaked Ladies show comes later in the day.
If you're picking a date off the calendar, the three discount days are worth checking first. Each one comes with a concert already included, so a Friday with Barenaked Ladies, a Monday with Gretchen Wilson and a Tuesday with Chandler Moore each pair a lower admission price with a night of music.
Getting the Timing Right
The free or discounted admission window and the concert seating are two separate clocks, and they don't run on the same schedule. Getting into the fairgrounds for free at 9 a.m. on Senior Day doesn't reserve you a seat at the pavilion twelve hours later. Seating for every concert is first-come, first-served, and gates to the pavilion itself don't open until 6:30 p.m., regardless of when you got onto the grounds.
If you're planning around one of the three discount days, the sequence looks something like this:
- Arrive at or near the start of the discount window (9 a.m. for Senior Day, gates-open for the other two) to get the admission benefit.
- Spend the afternoon on the parts of the fair that don't require standing in a concert line: livestock barns, exhibits, the midway.
- Head to the Budweiser Pavilion well before the 6:30 p.m. gate opening if you want a seat for that night's act, since the free or discounted ticket gets you onto the grounds but not into a chair.
Because pavilion seating is first come, first served, KGET reports that concertgoers should be ready to wait in line, potentially for several hours, to get a seat.
The Long Run of It
The Kern County Fair traces back to 1916, when it opened as the Kern County Agricultural Fair near the Kern River bridge, before moving to its current South P Street grounds in 1952. This year's run fits twelve concerts and three discount days into the same twelve days.
If you're weighing which of the twelve nights to go, the concert is included on all of them, so the discount days are the only dates where the admission price changes.
